At first glance, Saya seems your typical teenage schoolgirl, a member of the school track and field team, who lives peacefully with her family in Okinawa. Sounds a normal human girl, right? Wrong.

Otonashi Saya is, in actuality, not really a human, but a tool used to defeat monsters, called Chiropterans or 翼手 (yokushu). Her blood is the key to the death of these creatures, somehow forcing the cells in the entire body of the monster to die once these two substances react, leaving behind a crystallized shell in its wake, which crumbles to pieces immediately afterward. Her blood is not always this way, however.

She has a variety of personalities, a particular two being the most evident. One would be the 'human' Saya most people she has interacted with know. She is caring, determined and selfless, oftentimes putting herself before her loved ones. Upon finding that she has to fight for Red Shield no matter what, Saya agrees; if only in order to protect the her family, trying to keep them as far out of the way as possible to reduce the possible chance of them getting hurt or, even worse; ending up as a Chiropteran. Should what happened to George befall either Kai or Riku... Saya would be devastated.

She cares very much for them, hence, her family and friends are also her weakness. Her second, a darker side, surfaces when she truly 'awakens', sending her into a blood frenzy. Friend and foe all are the same to her in this state, and she will kill anyone on sight. This state is characterized by her eyes turning a deep, glowing red.

Saya's companion since more than 30 years ago is her Chevalier, Haji. They were best friends for a long time, even before that incident in which Saya unwittingly turned Haji into an undead in a bid to save his life, and they've rarely been apart ever since, because of the promise the two of them made.
